Geoacoustic Sediments

In 1977, when the legendary Belgian psychoacoustician Ernest Canular disappeared, he left a large collection of 1/4" tapes. What exactly these tapes contain has been subject of debate. Canular dedicated the last seven years of his life to developing techniques for recording geoacoustic sediments in the cliff chalk layers of Møn.

Only with the aid of recently developed digital restoration techniques has it become possible to play back the information on the tapes on a spectrum, which is audible to the human ear. This audio file is a recording of the tape, which was in Canulars recorder the day he disappeared. The recorder was found by Abildgaards Fald, south of Hylledals Slugt on Møn, Denmark.
